The Viral marketing for Chronicle might not get many people in the theatres but it sure is fun to watch. Thinkmodo was hired to do produce the first video below to help promote the “every-teen with superpowers’ film by building three custom radio-controlled planes shaped like people, which were then flown in and around New York City.

We just posted a review of the film by Rob who said, “Chronicle makes for an interesting counterpoint to Kick-Ass, Super and even Batman as artefacts which celebrate the idea of the everyman as a superhero by having these three teenagers use their powers in Jackass-style pranks and as a one-up in the perpetual battle for high school popularity”.

So for all you skeptics, do check it out.

Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Drive, was recently named the best film of 2011 by the Sound On Sight staff. It seems the folks over at the Alamo Drafthouse agree named it their favourite. With the film now released on Blu-ray, Ken Taylor of Mondo has created a slick new poster for the film.

The poster goes on sale today a random time. Find out when by following @MondoNews.

It’s a 24 x 36 inch screenprint, edition of 445 and will likely cost about $50.

Watch the trailer for the Academy Award nominated football documentary ‘Undefeated’

The documentary Undefeated (not to be confused with the documentary about Sarah Palin) recently picked up one of 16 Oscar nominations for Harvey Weinstein’s company this year. The inspirational doc follows the inner city high school football team the Manassas High School Tiger’s 2009 season, as they attempt to win their first playoff game in the 110-year history of the school. The team is so terrible that apparently they are used as warm up matches against much better teams. Much like Steve James’ great doc Hoop Dreams, the final product is said to be cut down from over 500 hours of footage, only it follows three players (instead of two): left tackle O.C. Brown, lineman Montrail “Money” Brown and linebacker Chavis Daniels. Here is the trailer.

Fantastic Mondo Poster for ‘Kill List’

One of my favorite films of 2011 is Ben Wheatley’s Kill List, a genre mash-up that is frustrating to write about simply because its mysteries really must be preserved in order for it to maintain its watching power. Ben Wheatley and his wife (and scriptwriting partner), Amy Jump, have created somewhat of a kitchen-sink thriller that blends gothic horror, black comedy, domestic drama and the whole buddy hitman movie element into a seamless whole. In the meantime, check out this amazing poster designed by Iron Jaiden (who also created Mondo’s posters for Videodrome and Repo Man).

Trailer for the Sundance Hit ‘L’, from the writer of ‘Dogtooth’

A trailer has been released for L, a film directed by Greek filmmaker Babis Makridis and co-written by Dogtooth and Alps writer Efthimis Filippou – and shot by cinematographer Thimios Bakatakis, who also worked on Dogtooth. As we’ve been told, the film looks pretty bizarre, but the reviews coming of out of Sundance have been extremely positive.

Here’s the synopsis, via Twitch:

A man lives in his car. He’s 40 and separated from his wife and kids, who live in a different car. They meet in parking lots. A professional driver, the man delivers honey to a narcoleptic man and often dreams of his friend, who was killed when a hunter mistook him for a bear. Frequently late delivering honey, the man is fired, and his driving skills are questioned. Thrust into existential uncertainty, he abandons “car life” and joins a rogue motorbike gang.

2012 Sundance Film Festival Announces Awards

Sundance is wrapping up once again this year and as with every year, quite a few films are generating quite the buzz. Among them is The House I Live In, The Law in These Parts and Violeta Went to Heaven who all earned Jury Prizes. The Sundance awards (while I rarely agree with the choices) are always interesting to follow each year, since the winners are sometimes entirely unexpected. This year there’s no surprise that the most talked about film – Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild, took home the top prize.

Here is the full list of winners from the press release, including the five Audience Award winners.

2012 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL JURY AWARDS:

The Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic was presented to Beasts of the Southern Wild, directed by Benh Zeitlin — Waters gonna rise up, wild animals gonna rerun from the grave, and everything south of the levee is goin’ under, in this tale of a six year old named Hushpuppy, who lives with her dad at the edge of the world.

The Grand Jury Prize: Documentary was presented to The House I Live In, directed by Eugene Jarecki — For over 40 years, the War on Drugs has accounted for 45 million arrests, made America the world’s largest jailer and damaged poor communities at home and abroad. Yet, drugs are cheaper, purer and more available today than ever. Where did we go wrong and what is the path toward healing?

The World Cinema Jury Prize: Dramatic was presented to Violeta Went to Heaven (from Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Spain), directed by Andrés Wood — A portrait of famed Chilean singer and folklorist Violeta Parra filled with her musical work, her memories, her loves and her hopes.

The World Cinema Jury Prize: Documentary was presented to The Law in These Parts (from Israel), directed by Ra’anan Alexandrowicz — Israel’s 43-year military legal system in the Occupied Palestinian Territories unfolds through provocative interviews with the system’s architects and historical footage showing the enactment of these laws upon the Palestinian population.

The US Directing Award: Dramatic was presented to Middle Of Nowhere, written and directed by Ava DuVernay — When her husband is incarcerated, an African-American woman struggles to maintain her marriage and her identity.

The US Directing Award: Documentary was presented to The Queen of Versailles, directed Lauren Greenfield — Jackie and David were triumphantly constructing the biggest house in America – a sprawling, 90,000-square-foot palace inspired by Versailles – when their timeshare empire falters due to the economic crisis. Their story reveals the innate virtues and flaws of the American Dream.

The World Cinema Directing Award: Dramatic was presented to Teddy Bear (from Denmark), directed by Mads Matthiesen — Dennis, a painfully shy 38-year-old bodybuilder who lives with his mother, sets off to Thailand in search of love.

The World Cinema Directing Award: Documentary was presented to 5 Broken Cameras (from Palestine, Israel, France), co-directed by Emad Burnat, Guy Davidi — A Palestinian journalist chronicles his village’s resistance to a separation barrier being erected on their land and in the process captures his young son’s lens on the world.

The Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award was presented to Safety Not Guaranteed, directed by Colin Trevorrow and written by Derek Connolly.

The World Cinema Screenwriting Award was presented to Young & Wild, co-written by Marialy Rivas, Camila Gutiérrez, Pedro Peirano, Sebastián Sepúlveda — 17-year-old Daniela, raised in the bosom of a strict Evangelical family and recently unmasked as a fornicator by her shocked parents, struggles to find her own path to spiritual harmony.

The US Documentary Editing Award was presented to Detropia, co-directed by Heidi Ewing, Rachel Grady — The woes of Detroit are emblematic of the collapse of the US manufacturing base. This is the dramatic story of a city and its people who refuse to leave the building, even as the flames are rising.

The World Cinema Documentary Editing Award was presented to Indie Game: The Movie, co-directed by Lisanne Pajot, James Swirsky — Follow the dramatic journeys of indie game developers as they create games and release those works, and themselves, to the world.

The Excellence in Cinematography Award: US Dramatic was presented to Beasts of the Southern Wild, directed by Benh Zeitlin, featuring cinematography by Ben Richardson.

The Excellence in Cinematography Award: US Documentary was presented to Chasing Ice, directed by Jeff Orlowski, featuring photography by National Geographic’s James Balog and cinematography by Jeff Orlowski.

A US Documentary Special Jury Prize for an Agent of Change was presented to Love Free or Die, directed by Macky Alston — One man whose two defining passions are in conflict: an openly gay bishop refuses to leave the Church or the man he loves.

A US Documentary Special Jury Prize for Spirit of Defiance was presented to Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, directed by Alison Klayman — Renowned Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has garnered international attention as much for his ambitious artwork as his political provocations and increasingly public clashes with the Chinese government.

A US Dramatic Special Jury Prize for Excellence in Independent Film Producing was presented to Andrea Sperling and Jonathan Schwartz for Smashed and Nobody Walks.

A US Dramatic Special Jury Prize for Ensemble Acting was presented to The Surrogate, written and directed by Ben Lewin, starring John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, William H. Macy, Moon Bloodgood and Annika Marks.

A World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Prize for Artistic Vision was presented to Can (from Turkey), written and directed by Rasit Celikezer — A young married couple live happily in Istanbul, but their decision to illegally procure a child threatens their future together.

The Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prizes, presented to outstanding feature films focusing on science or technology as a theme, were presented to Robot & Frank, directed by Jake Schreier and written by Christopher Ford, and Valley of Saints, directed and written by Musa Syeed. The two films will split the $20,000 cash award by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

The Audience Award: Dramatic was presented to The Surrogate, written and directed by Ben Lewin, about: Mark O’Brien, a 36-year-old poet and journalist in an iron lung, decides he no longer wishes to be a virgin. With the help of his therapist and the guidance of his priest, he contacts a professional sex surrogate to take him on a journey to manhood.

The Audience Award: Documentary was presented to The Invisible War, directed by Kirby Dick, about: an investigative and powerfully emotional examination of the epidemic of rape of soldiers within the US military, the institutions that cover up its existence and the profound personal and social consequences that arise from it.

The World Cinema Audience Award: Dramatic was presented to Valley of Saints, written and directed by Musa Syeed, about: Gulzar plans to run away from the war and poverty surrounding his village in Kashmir with his best friend, but a beautiful young woman researching the dying lake leads him to contemplate a different future.

The World Cinema Audience Award: Documentary was presented to Searching for Sugar Man, directed by Malik Bendjelloul, about: Rodriguez was the greatest ‘70s US rock icon who never was. Hailed as the greatest recording artist of his generation he disappeared into oblivion – rising again from the ashes in a completely different context many miles away.

The Best of NEXT!: Audience Award was presented to Sleepwalk With Me, co-written and directed by Mike Birbiglia, about: Reluctant to confront his fears of love, honesty, and growing up, a budding standup comedian has both a hilarious and intense struggle with sleepwalking.

Sundance 2012: Trailer for ‘Fishing Without Nets’, a Somali pirate movie

At age 25, Cutter Hodierne is headed to Sundance with his short film Fishing Without Nets, where it will have its world premiere Thursday night at Park City’s Egyptian Theatre. The 17-minute film is a fictional drama about an impoverished Somali fisherman who is lured into working with a group of pirates. The short film has already began garnering interest in Hollywood and a feature-length version is said to start shooting as early as the summer. Here’s the trailer.

Poster Of The Day: ‘Once Upon A Time In Anatolia’

Once Upon A Time In Anatolia recently made our end year list of best films of 2011. The poster below is great for two reasons: First it highlights the best scene in the film and secondly it makes for a great photo. Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (Turkish: Bir Zamanlar Anadolu’da) is a 2011 Turkish drama film, co-written and directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan based on the true experience of one of the film’s writers, telling the story of a group of men who search for a dead body on the Anatolian steppe. The film, which went on nationwide general release across Turkey on September 23, 2011, premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival where it was a co-winner of the Grand Prix. The film has been selected as Turkey’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Bill Moyers visited George Lucas at Skywalker Ranch in northern California to discuss the ancient myths and personal values that have amalgamted into what we know has the Star Wars folklore. The films, which struck a deep chord with viewers, contain age-old myths, such as the hero’s journey, family, fatherhood, spiritual beliefs, the battle between good and evil, loyalty and so on. Mondo Creating A Studio Ghibli Poster Series Starting With ‘My Neighbor Totoro’

Olly Moss is one of the most popular artists working today and with good reason. His poster artwork for Mondo sells out right away, usually a within an hour or so, online. Now Mondo has now set his talents to working on a new project. The boutique will start releasing posters for the films of Studio Ghibli and the first poster, by Moss, is for Hayao Miyazaki‘s masterpiece My Neighbor Totoro (as seen below).

These are both 20 x 36 inch screenprints. The regular has an edition of 400 and costs $50 and the variant is an edition of 150 and costs $90. The poster go on sale sometime on Friday Dec. 16. Follow @MondoNews on Twitter for the announcement.

The first trailer has gone online and brings with it, some hope that the sequel will be much better than the predecessor. The stellar action sequence are elevated by a nicely chosen cut of The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.” The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, Adrianne Palicki, D.J. Cotrona, and Bruce Willis. G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens June 29th, 2012.

We also recently posted the music video for “Man Or Muppet”, and now we found this latest video, which features the cast and crew discussing the creation of the sound design, score and soundtrack for the film. Director James Bobin, Film Editor James Thomas, Supervising Sound Editors Kami Asgar and Sean McCormack, and Sound Re-recording Mixer Kevin O’Connell, all provide insight on how they brought The Muppets to life.

Watch the Music Video for “Man or Muppet”

Disney has released the music video for “Man or Muppet”, a song written by Flight of the Conchords Bret McKenzie, which served as the biggest highlight for the latest Muppet movie. The song is sung by Jason Segel and the Muppet Walter, and the video is essentially taken from the sequence in the film when the musical number is performed. With that said, if you haven’t yet seen the movie, I recommend not watching the clip since it will spoil the movie’s biggest surprise cameo. Everyone else, enjoy!

Marketing Campaign For ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Has Begun

It seems like the viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight Rises has begun! Two prominent outlets, Wired and Empire, posted mysterious CIA documents which seem to tie into the upcoming film. The first, posted on Wire, shows case files searching for a missing Russian nuclear official who specializes in fuel-cycle technology and reactor design. The second, featured on Empire, show related transcripts from a conversation between the CIA and some type of militia. It might not make any sense to anyone who hasn’t been keeping up to date with bloggers and their speculations (spoilers) of what the new film is about, but you can bet all your cards that it does indeed tie into Nolan’s Dark Knight Rises.

Stop What You Are Doing And Check Out The Trailer For ‘Cabin In The Woods’

The trailer for The Cabin in the Woods, the high concept slasher film distributed by Lionsgate, has now debuted online.

Producer Joss Whedon and director/co-writer Drew Goddard have been coy about how The Cabin in the Woods turns the horror sub-genre upside down, but judging by the first trailer, we get an idea that Whedon and Goddard have incorporated the scientific in the supernatural. The film revolves around five college-type characters who head to a cabin in the woods and are given clear and clever instructions by “white collar” characters. Once the “victims” arrive at the cabin, it becomes clear that the plan is to lure the kids there to have them break the given instructions so that they might then be “punished.”

The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchinson, Fran Kanz, Jesse Williams, Bradley Whitford, and Richard Jenkins. Here is the trailer.
