Canadian Film Festival: ‘My Loss, Your Gain’

My Loss, Your Gain

Directed by Elli Raynai

Written by Elli Raynai

Canada, 2012

Dark, gritty, and strangely perverse, Elli Raynai’s 5-minute short film, My Loss, Your Gain, will remind body horror film fanatics of David Cronenberg’s equally unnerving, The Fly.

As a man is enveloped in his strange, unknown scientific experiment, his obsession and consuming neurosis pushes him to the brink of madness, until one of his own failed experiments finally tips him over.

Short, powerful, and piteous, My Loss, Your Gain, provides a concise observation on how someone who is irreversibly absorbed into their work can feel as trapped and helpless as their unfinished, unrealized endeavor.

Made on a frugal, less-than-a-thousand-dollar-budget, you’re sure to get more than you paid for.

If Justin was a great writer, he’d write books. If he was a great cineaste, he’d be a filmmaker. Since he’s only marginally adequate in either of those two fields, he settled for the logical synthesis of the two; movie reviews. Hailing from the great city of Toronto, his favourite director is Woody Allen and his favourite film is Lost in Translation.
