Darren Aronofksy, Wolverine, Frank Miller, Samurais & More
Considering that Darren Aronofksy (The Wrestler, Requeim For A Dream) took interest in directing a Robocop reboot, I unlike most people am not surprised the director has chosen to helm a new 
Wolverine movie. Nor am I surprised by the director’s announcment in an interview with Drew McWeeny at Hitfix, that the official title of the film will be The Wolverine, and that it will not be a sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but will instead be a one-off story. He went on to say that it will live within its own universe, and won’t be a sequel in any conventional sense or have to follow or adhere much to what came before. According to the Playlist, Aronofsky agreed to do the film because he would have free rein and would be able to tell a much darker, different story.
Not a great deal of information is known about the film so far, save for the fact that Hugh Jackman is starring and the majority of it will be set in Japan. The rumor is that the screenplay is based on a Chris Claremeont/Frank Miller mini-series from 1982 in which Logan a Ronin/Samurai without a master, while having an affair with a married Japanese woman (the tragic Mariko Yashida) must battle her samurai-filled family to win her back. The first 4 issue miniseries featured a great plot, great art and excellent characterization of Wolverine. So Aronofsky directing a samurai/comic book flick with Matthew Libatique, (the cinematographer of Black Swan, The Fountain) based on a Frank Miller story and possibly having Clint Mansill on board seems too good to be true.
