There will be plenty of Hollywood studios competiting during the commercial breaks in tomorrow’s big game: Paramount’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, DreamWorks’ Need For Speed and Marvel’s Captain America: Winter Soldier are just a few of the action titles expected to be promoted. It isn’t clear if the Pompeii movie trailer will actually air during the Super Bowl or as part of the pre-game or post-game show. Whatever the case, the Pompeii Super Bowl spot has been released online, a day in advance, and if you like gladiatorial combat, this trailer is for you.

Paul W.S. Anderson has carved out a niche in the business of being hard-working and staying within budget. His first major breakthrough was directing the first Mortal Kombat movie, which managed to make it’s money back, and later become a cult classic. He has since been involved with several other video-game inspired movies, all with a similar degree of respect. Based on a script written by Janet Scott and Lee Batchler (Batman Forever), Michael Robert Johnson (Sherlock Holmes) and Julia Fellowes (Downton Abbey), Pompeii stars Emily Browning (Sleeping Beauty), Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) and Kiefer Sutherland (24)

Pompeii is due in theaters on Feb. 21, 2014.
