Sound On Sight Radio #190: Claire Denis / Academy Awards

Claire Denis’ 35 Shots of Rum turned out to be 2009′s biggest movie – in film snob circles, that is. Since we’ve already discussed that film, Rick, Simon and special guest Olivier Creurer tackle three of Denis’ other acclaimed features – Beau Travail, Trouble Every Day, and L’Intrus – with varying degrees of success. And of course, some trophies of some kind were handed out this past weekend, so we might have occasion to talk about that too.

The Secret In Their Eyes is better than A Prophet and The White Ribbon. See it noob.

yeah I really do think 35 Shots of Rum is her best film. I am going to sit down and finish Trouble Every Day but I am quite confident that I will still end up hating it.

The only three Claire Denis films I have seen are Trouble Every Day, Beau Travail, and 35 Shots of Rum. My least favorite of the three is Trouble Every Day, but I still loved that one. It’s actually the one I’ve seen most recently and I think it’s probably one of the most intense films I’ve seen in a long time. I liked the underlying tension of the film, but I can easily see why many people would dislike it. It takes a lot of patience to get through and the style of the film makes it seem like the audience is dropped in the middle of a real complicated, weird plot. As for Beau Travail and 35 Shots of Rum, I loved those films. I think i liked 35 Shots of Rum a tiny bit more.
