In this episode of They Shot Pictures, I am joined by Sean Gilman and Marc Lawless to discuss the films of Josef von Sternberg. In particular, we discuss The Docks of New York, Morocco and The Saga of Anatahan.
Be warned, there’s a lot of gushing, not only over Sternberg’s gorgeous filmmaking but also Dietrich, Cooper and Cary Grant (can you blame us?). Sean and Marc also bring up some really fun anecdotes surrounding these films.

Seema grew up in Bombay raised by a slapstick comedy aficionado (think Chaplin & Jerry Lewis) Dad and a mom who loves art house Malayalam cinema. These combined with a healthy dose of Bollywood melodramas on TV and an early fascination with [i]Pulp Fiction[/i] and [i]Rushmore[/i] cemented her ongoing obsession with films that continues to this day. Some of her favorite films include [i]Charulata[/i]. [i]A Brighter Summer Day[/i] and Vendredi Soir. Besides They Shot Pictures, Seema also co-hosts a podcast on world cinema called Cinema on the Road.
