They Shot Pictures Episode #07: Hou Hsiao-hsien
In this episode of They Shot Pictures, I am joined by my friends, Sean Gilman (@theendofcinema) and Lance McCallion (@LanceJMc) to talk about a much beloved Taiwanese filmmaker, Hou Hsiao-hsien. We start with his 1984 film, A Summer at Grandpa’s, move on to 1995′s Good Men, Good Women and conclude with a discussion of Millennium Mambo (2001).

Seema grew up in Bombay raised by a slapstick comedy aficionado (think Chaplin & Jerry Lewis) Dad and a mom who loves art house Malayalam cinema. These combined with a healthy dose of Bollywood melodramas on TV and an early fascination with [i]Pulp Fiction[/i] and [i]Rushmore[/i] cemented her ongoing obsession with films that continues to this day. Some of her favorite films include [i]Charulata[/i]. [i]A Brighter Summer Day[/i] and Vendredi Soir. Besides They Shot Pictures, Seema also co-hosts a podcast on world cinema called Cinema on the Road.
