Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage is to star in a remake of 1992 film “Bad Lieutenant,” the grim drama which stoked controversy for its explicit depictions of sex and drug use. Entertainment industry journal Daily Variety reported that the film, which featured Harvey Keitel as the lead in the original, would be directed by acclaimed German film-maker Werner Herzog.

Drawing elements from the original film, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans features a crooked cop (Nicolas Cage) who is a drug addict and takes sexual favors for bribes.

The script for the remake was penned by TV writer William Finkelstein. One major change from the original film was moving the setting from New York City to New Orleans. Herzog insists that the film is not a remake, saying, “It only has a corrupt policeman as the central character and that’s about it.” Herzog went on to say that he has never seen Ferrara’s film.

Sorry guys but first off, I don`t believe Herzog when he says he has not seen the original. We are talking about the same man who asks the people he interviews in docs to do certain things they would not normally do in order to make his films a bit more powerful. Don`t get me wrong, I do like Herzog but everyone know he always lies. He is one of the great film makers but this film does not look good mostly due to it`s cast. Come on guys. Val Kilmer and Nick Cage?

Kilmer and Cage are both capable of good, even great work in the right hands. Think of all the films Cage has been dreadful in – and then think of their scripts, which were almost all awful (“Knowing,” “The Wicker Man,” “National Treasure,” “Bangkok Dangerous”…) As for Kilmer, four words: “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.”

As for Herzog, does he really seem like the sort of guy who spends a lot of time watching other people’s movies?

Hey if you want to beleive Herzog and watch this movie than go ahead. I could care less. I do not want to see a great film maker remaking movies. Sorry but that is just me.
