Trailers: Shutter Island

From Oscar-winning director Martin Scorese, “Shutter Island” is the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane. The film is based on the 2003 novel Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. Production started in March 2008; Shutter Island is slated to be released on October 2, 2009.

Looks damn good. I like Scorsese throwing in some horror style flourishes. But I have to say I’ve never been a fan of any DiCaprio performances.
I really didn’t care for “The Departed”, Leonardo De Caprio annoys me and the trailer looks really cheasy, I’ll probably skip it, lots of movies to see not enough time.
I totally understand why Leo rubs people the wrong way. The problem with an actor like him is that he can’t ever really escape his identity when transforming himself in a role, not because he is a bad actor but because he has a very particular look and voice. So whenever Leo is on screen you can’t help but think of the actor and not his character. However I do think he does a fairly great job in most of his films, especially in What`s Eating Gilbert Grape. I thought The Departed was brilliant and yes I was a fan of Internal Affairs long before Scorsese remade it. In fact the very first DVD I placed in my staff picks way back working at a video store was the original.
Anyhow my friend Tim is right. The trailer gives away the entire film. I wish Hollywood would stop doing this.
I can give you two more good performances by Di Caprio, “This Boy’s Life” and “The Basketball Diaries”, but nowadays he’s just painful to watch.
I thought that “Infernal Affairs” was a good movie triology but “The Departed” was just plain bad. It’s full of clichés and dumbed down it was actually hard for me to stomach it. Di Caprio was a total miscast, he’s not believable as a cop or any other kind of slightly tough guy, he acting all paranoid all the time was also not believeable at all, Jack Nicholson’s constant over-acting was unbearable, the completely vomit inducing love triangle… I could go on but I wont. Two good things in the movie, the opening with Dropkick Murphys’ I’m Shipping Up To Boston and Mark Wahlberg on one of his best performances ever (not that hard I know). I’m sorry to bring up my inner Al but I really hate that movie.
I think this will be really good. For the most part, you can’t go wrong with DiCaprio and considering it’s a Scorsese movie, I think it will deliver. I mean…take away maybe Kundun, whch was ok but extremely boring and, the guy has really yet to make a bad movie.
I like Denis Lehane and looking back, Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone made good films. It is Scorsese so it won`t be bad. You may not like all of his films but he never really made a bad picture.
This looks weirdly predictable, but fun. Apparently the book is ridiculous, so I’m hoping he has some fun with the material and doesn’t play it too straight.
