Watch Shinya Tsukamoto’s Animated Short Film
One of the most important names in contemporary Japanese cinema, Shinya Tsukamoto has done groundbreaking work in arousing international attention for Japanese film. When his still powerful, independently made, cyber-punk black-and-white horror film Tetsuo: the Iron Man toured an unprecedented number of festivals in the late 80s and early 90s, many Americans took great notice.
At home however, Tsukamoto has always kept a position in the margins. Despite doing the occasional, but always interesting, director-for-hire jobs (such as Hiruko the Goblin and Gemini), he has remained mostly independent, but when not still managed to incorporate his unique and very distinct style.
Commissioned as a short ‘bumper’ by the Ca’ Foscari Cinema in Venice, the director has just completed his first foray into animation, a bizarre and abstract hand drawn by Tsukamoto himself. Watch the animated short below.
Enjoy!
